Tucker Details:

Tucker, GA was created from the old Georgia Militia District named, Browning District #572. The militia districts were created in 1824 and there were originally 16 militia districts in DeKalb County. Our own, Browning Courthouse was a civil court, where a Justice of the Peace would be present on the third Saturday of each month. It was also used as a community meeting place. From current research, the small courthouse is the only example in the county of a militia district courthouse while other militia districts held court in homes or shops within the county.

Today, Browning Courthouse is used as a small museum which has been furnished as it might have been in the 1800's and has a display of copies of some of the court records dating back to the early 1800's.

Watch for upcoming Tucker Historical Society events in 2005, when the courthouse will be open to visit and you'll have an opportunity to learn about this interesting and special piece of local Tucker history.
